What is the difference between sheets and halyards?
Sheets
Adjusting the sails requires great knowledge of the onboard materials and an understanding of the wind. Sheets are used to adjust the angle of the sails to the wind. Regardless of whether you are sailing windward or leeward, all changes of direction require the sails to be adjusted using the sheets.
Biltema’s sheets help to regulate the shape and performance of the sail for maximum efficiency during sailing. We sell sheets in the following sizes:
- Sheet 6 mm x 20 m
- Sheet 8 mm x 25 m
- Sheet 10 mm x 24 m
- Sheet 10 mm x 20 m
- Sheet 12 mm x 24 m
Halyards
Halyards are the ropes that you work often with on the boat. That’s because they are the ropes used to hoist or reef the sails. So, put on a good pair of gloves and start pulling the halyard to hoist the sails and get up to speed. Halyards are also used to adjust the tension and shape of the sails. Depending on how tightly tensioned the halyard is, the sail moves forwards and backwards in depth.
Biltema stocks most types of halyards, and you can find them here on the page. We have halyards in the following sizes:
- Halyard 8 mm x 30 m
- Halyard 10 mm x 35 m
- Halyard 12 mm x 40 m
William A. Ward once wrote: “The pessimist complains of the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.”
So, realistically, you should hurry to Biltema if you need to update your sheets and halyards on your sailboat. Then you will be able to adjust the sails more safely during the sailing season.
We have individual sheets and halyards with shackles. Our sheets and halyards are non-elastic and have low flexibility.
We quality assure all our ropes, such as sheets and halyards. In other words, you can feel assured when you buy ropes at Biltema. How to get ready for the sailing season – without paying more.
Unfortunately, our sheets and halyards are not sold by the metre.
