The size of the boat trailer must correspond to the boat
A boat trailer has two main functions: it must carry the boat safely and roll safely on the road. This means that the trailer must fit both your boat and your towing vehicle. To find the right trailer size, you should start from the length and width of your boat. It should be about the same length as the boat. Also, the boat must not protrude more than 20 cm to the sides or be wider than 260 cm. Read more on the Swedish Transport Agency’s website if you are transporting a wider boat.
Braked and unbraked boat trailers
An unbraked boat trailer does not have brakes, which means that it is only the towing vehicle in front of the trailer that brakes. Unbraked boat trailers are mainly used by private individuals with smaller boats and who do not need to transport the boat far between storage and the port. If you are transporting a larger boat, you should instead invest in a braked boat trailer.
Frequently asked questions about boat trailers
Should I buy a braked or unbraked boat trailer?
A braked boat trailer is suitable for transporting a large boat, over long distances, or when driving on roads at high speed. When transporting a smaller boat, an unbraked trailer is sufficient.
How fast can I drive with a boat trailer?
An unregistered trailer may only be driven at 30 km/h. A registered boat trailer may be driven at higher speeds.
Can I transport other things on my boat trailer besides for a boat?
Yes and no. You may only load your boat on an unregistered boat trailer. If the trailer is registered, you are also allowed to transport other things on it.
